The Art of Being Normal (Chapters 11 to 20)

Comment on these sentences from The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson:

  • Because on page twenty-three of the newspaper there is an article about a teenage girl in America who has just been elected homecoming queen at her school.
  • "Hey, how about a quick round of Snog, Marry, Throw Off a Cliff?" Tom suggests.
  • "You will be in detention for the next month, starting tomorrow, and on probation for the remainder of your time here."
  • The saw on the screen is a flimsy little thing, nothing like the massive weapon I'd envisaged Leo swinging about the corridors of Cloverdale School.
  • "We have two, one before Christmas and one in the summer. And Harry is in charge this year. He's promising a snow machine at the Christmas one."
  • Because "normal" kids don't have six files' worth of notes on them. "Normal" kids don't see therapists.  "Normal" kids don't have mothers like mine...
  • Twenty minutes later we pass a dilapidated "Welcome to the Cloverdale Estate" sign. I sit up a little straighter. Mum flicks the interior door locks on.
  • "I had a call from Mr Toolan on Tuesday," she says, setting down her mug.
  • "I mean, the fact a character like her got written all those years ago is big enough. How confusing would that be though? A guy playing a girl pretending to be a guy?"
  • I think of me and Alicia; how we might look walking down the corridor together, my arm slung round her shoulder, hers round my waist."

Remembrance Day

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

The Art of Being Normal (Chapters 1 to 10)

Comment on these sentences from The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson:

  • "I take the tape measure and wrap it around my hips. No change. I go straight up and down, like a human ruler."
  • "I straighten the lapels and relax my shoulders. I ordered the size up so it's a bit baggy on me. I don't mind though; this way I can fit a hoodie underneath."
  • "I crouch back down and begin tucking the duvet underneath her, working all the way down her spindly little body until she looks like a mummy."
  • "Bam! The spitball strikes me hard on the back of my neck. I twist round in my seat, Harry is pretending to tie his shoe-laces."
  • "I have loved Zachary Olsen ever since we shared the same paddling pool, aged four. The fact I was once in such close proximity to his semi-naked body is sometimes too much to bear."
  • "Mam's last boyfriend did a runner with our telly. But then Mam's boyfriends always do a runner eventually."
  • "It's a full-length shot of him standing next to a red Ford Fiesta. He must have just finished washing it because it's really shiny and there's a bucket of soapy water at his feet."
  • "She usually wears her hair down but today it's up and I can see her neck. I imagine kissing it. The thought makes me feel hot all over."
